It doesn’t matter where you grew up or for that matter in which decade to establish if you’re destined for a life of automotive culture. Determining factors surround us on a daily basis and it’s fate that finally brings the sounds of a hopped-up V-8 into your world, forever changing it. For Chris Longhouse of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, it all started the day his parents handed him his first plastic kit model to assemble at the kitchen table at age 6. Why Good Wife Fans May Not Like The Series Finale, According To Julianna Margulies

After seven seasons, CBS’ The Good Wife is finally wrapping things up at the end of this season. Well, “wrapping up” might not be the right phrase to use, as series star Julianna Margulies says things won’t quite be so tidy when the show ends.

I said to Christine [Baranski] when we shot the last scene, ‘Wow. The fans are either gonna love this or hate this, but there’s not going to be a ‘meh.’ There’s no tied up bows. And I hope that the fans can understand the trajectory it puts Alicia on.

It was Ditch Day at work Thursday, so we picked up some nugs, pimped a 40, and headed to our buddy “RAD” Dan Burkett’s house because his folks were gone and we were ‘bout to get tore the f**k up. Well, actually, most of that didn’t happen, but we did get an invite from the mullet king himself to join him and RAD Industries accomplice Jeff Le as they prepped and shook down Burkett’s Mark IV Toyota Supra at Walt James Stadium on the grounds of Willow Springs International Motorsports Park before the team packs up for Round 1 of the Formula…

Kurt Sutter Updates on 'Dark and Beautiful' 'Sons of Anarchy' Spinoff

We haven’t heard very much from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter after the public cancellation of FX followup The Bastard Executioner, and less so on the proposed biker spinoff, at least until now. A new update from Sutter indicates the Mayan-focused Sons of Anarchy spinoff is moving forward, potentially even scouting locations as well.

Where previously Sutter’s involvement in the biker spinoff was tied up in The Bastard Executioner’s international production, the controversial creator indicated over Twitter that…

Google CEO: “We will move from mobile first to an AI first world”

We all know that Google is more than just a search engine. Android is the leading smartphone platform, Gmail is the best email client and Google Photos is the best photo service available on the web. Then you’ve got Google Maps, Google Play Music, and the list goes on. In Google’s annual Founder’s Letter, Sundar Pichai shared that the company will continue to push in different directions, emphasizing enterprise cloud solutions and artificial intelligence.

Google has been in the cloud computing game for some time, but the company is finally ready to offer…

Trump University and the art of the get-rich seminar

Editor’s note: Though this isn’t usual Ars Technica fare, we’re publishing a non-tech story because we had a reporter with deep personal experience relevant to a topic of national interest.

In 2005, both of us became fixated on a late-night infomercial that promised access to “hundreds of billions of dollars” in “free government money.” As journalism grad students at the time, our evenings often ended with a couple beers as we decompressed by watching whatever was on our tiny 13″ TV. And what was on at the time—repeatedly—was a half-hour…

Galaxy S7 Edge battles HTC 10 in speed tests

We are all impatient today and what may be only a few seconds for your smartphone to boot up or perform a task feels like an eternity when you are in a hurry. The HTC 10 and Galaxy S7 Edge have been pitted against each other in several speed tests to see which is faster for a variety of tasks. The first is a simple bootup test.

The Galaxy device in the test uses the Exynos chip and the HTC has a Snapdragon 820. The Samsung device boots up quite a bit faster than the HTC. The next test was a comparison of how fast the two…

Pokemon GO: All Pokemon Spawns Shared By Players

Pokemon fans will feel like real trainers with the upcoming Pokemon GO as they explore outside their homes just to catch a creature in real world locations. Making Pokemon appear in real world locations has raised numerous questions among fans on how Niantic will implement this in the game. Some fans are wondering how far they might travel just to capture a rare Pokemon, and some are wondering how they will be able to catch Legendary Pokemon in the game.

The most interesting question raised recently is if all players will see the same Pokemon that appears on their…

How Domino’s Put Automagic Pizza on Every Device. Like, Every Device

“Alexa,” I said, “order a Domino’s pizza.”

Alexa wasn’t having it.

Amazon’s electronic assistant foiled my first attempt at ordering a Domino’s pie through one of the company’s many platform plays. I also could have tweeted or texted or even turned on the TV. But I chose Amazon Echo because my Echo and I have a good rapport. Or we did, until I tried having it deliver a pizza to my mouth.

Alexa vexed me. I’d done the requisite work, setting up a Pizza Profile on the Domino’s desktop site, enabling the Domino’s “skill” in my Alexa app,…

Can tech teach kids to teach themselves? XPRIZE, Google, and the UN team up to find out

GLEXP_reading_rHundreds of millions of kids around the world lack access to, among other things, basic education — much less organized school systems with adequate teaching resources. XPRIZE is hoping that tech can help where humanitarian efforts have yet to make a dent — and putting $15 million on the line to that end, with the help of Google and the United Nations.

The goal is to create a software and hardware platform that will allow kids anywhere — but in Tanzania, to start — to pursue their own literacy education without the need for any top-down organization…

Bad Move: FBI won’t Share San Bernardino iPhone Hack with Apple

The FBI isn’t going to share the hack it bought to get into Syed Farook’s iPhone with Apple, which means the law enforcement agency is intentionally withholding a 0-day exploit that could potentially be discovered by other parties and used before a patch is released. The reasoning behind the decision is that the FBI doesn’t know how the hack works, and therefore complying with the White House Vulnerabilities Equities Process (VEP) wouldn’t reveal any useful information.

FBI executive assistant director for science and technology Amy Hess told Bloomberg,

Cute robotic monk knows the meaning of life

Xian’er’s touchscreen chest gives him a way to answer questions, such as “What is the meaning of life?” To which he’d reply: “My master says the meaning of life is to help more people finally leave behind bitterness and gain happiness.” He also has a WeChat account under the name 贤二机器僧 where he talks with people who can’t go to the temple, though we couldn’t seem to find and add him when we tried. The temple’s human monks have no plans to mass produce Xian’er, but they’re already working on a smarter, more advanced robot that…

Jazz drumming to Super Smash Bros. is better than any commentary

I usually have a hard time following competitive Super Smash Bros. matches, but honestly, they make so much more sense when accompanied by some freeform jazz drumming. The video above shows what a perfect pairing this is — with drummer Caleb Goss providing a soundtrack to a January 2015 bout between players Armada_UGS and L3ff3n.

It’s amazing how well Goss matches his drumming with the characters’ attacks. Look at 1:04 for example, when Goss taps out Fox McCloud’s laser hits on the cymbal, or at 1:32 when he matches Princess Peach’s killer turnip blow…

MSI Cubi 2 Plus Review: Close to the perfect mini PC

You would be forgiven for thinking the desktop PC is in trouble considering how often we hear about declining desktop sales — even Microsoft is pointing to the market’s nine-year slump for missing its quarterly profit target. But despite regularly reading about poor mainstream PC sales, it isn’t all bad news as two very different desktop segments are on the rise and in a big way.

Unsurprisingly, gaming PCs are in huge demand right now and at the opposite end of the spectrum so too are small form-factor computers. Driving both ends of the market is Intel with…

And we’re back in business. After last week’s rather inconsequential episode, it finally felt like Legends of Tomorrow got back to telling a story with some actual weight to it this week. If I’m reading this thing right, “Leviathan” is basically the first hour of a four hour season finale, and Legends has by far done its best work when it behaves as if it has no time to lose. Which it doesn’t.

Seriously, I will be shocked if the show leaves 2166 again before that final episode….

Wow, Bones Just Delivered Its Creepiest Serial Killer Yet

Spoilers for Bones are below.

For 11 seasons now, Bones has bludgeoned viewers with a variety of sadistic and malicious murderers, holding our eyes open with other people’s fingernails to make sure we caught every disturbing moment, and then buried us alive with the memories. But whoa boy, “The Monster in the Closet” really kicked things up a notch in the horror zone for the show’s latest (and possibly last) serial killer, who has already ascended the ranks to become the most unsettling antagonist yet. Future episodes may water down that opinion, of…

'Suicide Squad' Star Margot Robbie Defends Harley Quinn's Costume

Not only did Harley Quinn become an instant fan favorite following her debut on Batman: The Animated Series, but she quickly became an iconic villain, and it wasn’t long before she transitioned to the pages of DC Comics. While most fans agree that Margot Robbie is the perfect choice for the role in Suicide Squad, there’s been much less agreement over her wardrobe — or lack thereof — in David Ayer’s upcoming film. Robbie herself has officially chimed in, offering her thoughts on Harley’s controversial fashion…

Next up for the franchise is Suicide Squad, which premieres in theaters later this year and where Batman will make another appearance. But for a continuation of the story started in Dawn of Justice, fans may have to wait until next year’s Wonder Woman.

NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards eyes third straight win

Edwards going for victory at Talladega

Carl Edwards has long advocated NASCAR’s implementation of a lower downforce aerodynamics package for its race cars.

Lowering the downforce on a car makes it harder to control, which causes more passing and emphasizes driver skill over engineering expertise.

His wish was granted this year.

Unsurprisingly, Edwards has excelled under NASCAR’s new lower downforce aerodynamics package. The No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver tops the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings on the strength of two wins, five top-five and eight top-10…

Microsoft announced back in 2015 that it made the decision to downgrade OneDrive plans for paying and free users without revealing at that time why it made the decision.

The company came clean later by stating publicly that the economics of existing plans were unsustainable, and that it had to change them because of that.

The move did irritate users of the service and here especially free users who Microsoft wanted to restrict to 5 Gigabytes of storage.

That was a big downgrade from the 15 Gigabytes the company offered to free users (which does not even include free…

Introduction

Did you know that flour can explode? Luckily, this does not happen spontaneously on your kitchen counter, but only if the conditions are right. You need a very fine powder of flour to make an explosion happen. In fact, any solid flammable material that is dispersed in the air as a dust cloud will explode if it comes into contact with flame (a reason extreme caution must be used where there is a large amount of grain dust, such as in storage facilities). Why is that? It has to do with the particle…

Volkswagen reveals more efficient new 1.5 TSI engine

Volkswagen AG has unveiled the first of its more efficient new-generation EA211 turbo-petrol engines, a 1.5-litre TSI that will replace the 1.4 TSI used in models such as the Golf, Skoda Octavia and Audi A3.

Revealed overnight at the annual Vienna Motor Symposium, this new unit trickle into a range of VW products from the end of 2016. Notably, it has variable turbine geometry — something VW says is the first such application on a “volume-produced” spark ignition engine.

This includes the application sandbox and Security APIs in the platform, Security APIs in Google Play Services, and even open source testing tools. Last year, Google Play also helped developers enhance the security of their applications by looking directly at the code they’ve written and offering suggestions for improvements.

YOUR phone is buzzing: it is time for your medication. You point the camera at your face so that an app can confirm your identity. It then approves the dose of the pill you show it, and watches as you put the pill on your tongue and drink a glass of water. Algorithms listen in and inspect your face and throat for any signs that you might be faking. The app dings. You may now go about the rest of your day.

The app, AiCure, is being used in US drug trials to ensure participants stick to the rules. It could also have…

Allergy-Free Peanuts? Not So Fast

My husband and I discovered our daughter’s peanut allergy while we were 35,000 feet in the air over Denver. Even though we knew she was allergic to eggs, our allergist had told us there was no reason to avoid any other foods, and so the week before I’d given her a bit of peanut butter and chalked up the slight rash she developed to eczema. As we began our descent into Denver, I gave her a bite of a protein bar. About ten minutes later she started screaming. Her face turned bright pink.

Was it anaphylaxis or the pressure in her ears from landing? She was only…

A Beautiful Planet: Shooting IMAX Is Hard Enough on Earth. In Space, It’s Preposterous

The IMAX 3D movie A Beautiful Planet hits theaters tomorrow, on April 29. The film was shot on the International Space Station, so unless you’re an astronaut, you’ll see views of our pale blue dot that you’ve never seen before. Mesmerizing flybys of cities at night, street lights smoldering like charcoal embers. Neon-green auroras, glowing like black-light posters. The crystal-blue waters of the Bahamas, urging you to cannonball in from orbit.

Surprisingly, A Beautiful Planet is the first IMAX space production to use digital cameras instead of film cameras.

How to recover files from a dead external drive

Nannette Abia Rivera’s external hard drive stopped working, and she needs to recover files stored on it.

When you store files on an external drive, it’s easy to forget my first rule of tech storage: Never have only one copy of anything. We tend to think of external drives—especially external hard drives—as a backup medium, so of course anything on the drive must be a backup.

But if files exist only on that external drive, they are not backed up. And you need to make sure they get backed up to something other than that particular drive—whether it’s an…

Sarcasm Spurs Creative Thinking

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence,” that connoisseur of witticisms, Oscar Wilde, is said to have remarked. But not everyone shares his view. Communication experts and marriage counselors alike typically advise us to stay away from this particular form of expression. The reason is simple: sarcasm carries the poisonous sting of contempt, which can hurt others and harm relationships. By its very nature, it invites conflict.
